Harbor Bridge Project announces the opening of newly constructed routes affecting multiple traffic patterns around the SH 286 (Crosstown Expressway) and IH 37 Interchange

CORPUS CHRISTI – Beginning in August 2021, traffic around the IH 37 and SH 286 Interchange will shift in three phases through the fall of 2021.  As Harbor Bridge Project roadwork progresses to tie in US 181 to the new South Interchange, we urge motorists to be aware of the following upcoming traffic switches and associated message board notifications.

PHASE I – Beginning in August 2021, Phase I of the South Interchange movement will affect motorists heading northbound on SH 286 to northbound and southbound IH 37. Traffic will be routed onto the newly constructed connector ramp and Antelope Street. Northbound IH 37 motorists will utilize Antelope Street to cross over the Staples Street Bridge to access the northbound IH 37 frontage road. In addition, Southbound IH 37 motorists will utilize the new connector ramp to continue to northbound US 181. In addition, motorists can access the Uptown and Bayfront areas by utilizing the northbound SH 286 Comanche Street exit. Notifications for Phase I and associated temporary northbound SH 286 and southbound IH 37 mainlane closures will be released as separate traffic advisories.

PHASE II – Beginning in August 2021, Phase II of the South Interchange movement will affect motorists heading southbound on US 181 (existing Harbor Bridge) and northbound IH 37 to  southbound SH 286. Traffic heading from Portland, North Beach, Uptown, and the Bayfront areas will be routed onto the newly constructed Northwest Loop Ramp to access southbound SH 286. In addition, motorists from the Uptown and Bayfront areas can connect with southbound SH 286 via Comanche Street. Notifications for Phase II and associated temporary lane closures will be released as separate traffic advisories.

PHASE III – Beginning in September 2021, Phase III of the South Interchange movement will affect motorists heading from southbound IH 37 to southbound SH 286. Traffic heading south will be shifted onto the ramp previously used for northbound SH 286 to northbound IH 37. Notifications for Phase III and associated IH 37 full mainlane temporary closures will be sent as separate traffic advisories.

Motorists are urged to be aware of the route changes, lane closures, consider using alternate routes, follow all traffic control devices, and to slow down in the work zones.  All work is weather permitting.
