On November 20, temporary closure to affect all IH 37 southbound mainlanes at the SH 286 interchange, and direct connector closure from northbound SH 286 to northbound IH 37

CORPUS CHRISTI –All IH 37 southbound main lanes at the SH 286 (Crosstown Expressway) interchange, in addition to the direct connector from northbound SH 286 to northbound IH 37, will be closed beginning 9 pm Friday, November 20, through 6 am Monday, November 23. The closures are necessary for constructing new interchange bridges as part of the Harbor Bridge Replacement Project.

Motorists heading southbound on IH 37 towards downtown and North Beach will be detoured onto southbound SH 286 (Crosstown Expressway), make a U-turn at Tarlton Avenue, and back to southbound IH 37.

Motorists heading northbound on SH 286 will take the IH 37 southbound exit and make a U-turn at Chaparral Street to continue northbound on IH 37.

Electronic message boards will be in place to alert motorists of the closures and detour routes.

Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes, to be aware of the mainlane closures, follow all traffic control devices, and to slow down in the work zones.  All work is weather permitting.

On November 13, temporary closure set for the direct connector from northbound SH 286 to northbound IH 37

CORPUS CHRISTI –The direct connector from northbound SH 286 (Crosstown Expressway) to northbound IH 37 will be closed beginning at 9 pm Friday, November 13, through 6 am Monday, November 16.  This is a full weekend closure.

The closure is necessary for construction of the new interchange bridges at this location as part of the Harbor Bridge Replacement Project. Motorists heading northbound on SH 286 will take the IH 37 southbound exit and make a U-turn at Chaparral Street to continue northbound on IH 37.

Electronic message boards will be in place to alert motorists to the closure and detour route.

On October 31, changes to affect northbound IH 37, Nueces Bay Boulevard Exit Ramp

CORPUS CHRISTI –Beginning Saturday, October 31, 2020, the newly constructed exit ramp for Port Avenue from northbound IH 37 will be open for motorists. This exit ramp is part of new work associated with the Harbor Bridge Replacement Project.

The northbound exit ramp to Nueces Bay Boulevard will be permanently closed on Saturday, October 31, 2020.  Motorists heading northbound on IH 37 can access Nueces Bay Boulevard by utilizing the newly opened Port Avenue exit ramp, continuing along the frontage road to Nueces Bay Boulevard.

Detour signs will be in place to direct motorists.

On September 25, mainlane closures to affect US 181 and IH 37

CORPUS CHRISTI –Full Weekend Closure - Rescheduled Due to Weather

New Dates: Beginning Friday, September 25, at 9:00 pm through 6:00 am, Monday, September 28, the right mainlane of southbound US 181 to northbound IH 37 will be closed for the construction of the new Port Avenue exit ramp.  One lane will remain open through this area.

Message boards will be in place to alert motorists.

On September 16, closures and contraflow traffic to affect IH 37 northbound frontage road from Up River Road to N Port Avenue

CORPUS CHRISTI –On Wednesday, September 16, at 2 pm until 4 pm, traffic delays will be in effect along northbound IH 37 frontage road from Up River Road to N Port Avenue. Contraflow traffic along the frontage road and 10 minute intersection closures are necessary to relocate the Launching Gantry Crane from the North Approach to the South Approach of the Harbor Bridge Project.

Motorcycle officers will be on hand to divert traffic around the caravan and to assist with motorists delays at the intersections along the IH 37 northbound frontage road.

Beginning September 21, exit ramp changes to affect Nueces Bay Boulevard

CORPUS CHRISTI –Beginning Monday, September 21, the current exit ramp to Nueces Bay Boulevard from northbound IH 37 will be permanently closed.  Motorists heading northbound on IH 37 can access Nueces Bay Boulevard by utilizing the newly opened Port Avenue exit ramp and continuing along the frontage road to Nueces Bay Boulevard.  This exit ramp is part of new work for the Harbor Bridge replacement project.

Closure to affect northbound SH 286 (Crosstown Expressway) direct connector to northbound IH 37 has been EXTENDED through September 15

CORPUS CHRISTI –The nightly closure which began on July 22, is now extended through Tuesday, September 15, for the direct connector from northbound SH 286 (Crosstown Expressway) to northbound IH 37 from 9 pm until 6 am.  This closure is necessary for construction related to the Harbor Bridge Project.

Detours will be in place to take the IH 37 southbound exit from SH 286 and make a U-turn at Chaparral Street to IH 37 northbound. Traffic signs will assist motorists with navigating through the alternate route.

Beginning August 24, closure to affect Seigler Street on North Beach

CORPUS CHRISTI –Beginning, Monday, August 24, Seigler Street, which connects to E Causeway Boulevard on North Beach, will be closed until Wednesday, September 30.  The closure is necessary to disassemble and relocate the Harbor Bridge Project Gantry Crane.

Detour signs will be in place directing motorists to utilize E Walnut Street to E Causeway Boulevard.

Beginning August 27, US 181 Northbound Frontage Road will be open to traffic

CORPUS CHRISTI –Beginning Thursday, August 27, 2020, the newly reconstructed US 181 Northbound Frontage Road will be open, connecting Burleson Street to Beach Avenue. Additionally, Burleson Street between the northbound and southbound frontage road underneath US 181 will be closed for construction until the new Harbor Bridge Project is complete.

Beginning August 17, closure to affect IH 37 Northbound Mainlanes Tonight

CORPUS CHRISTI –Beginning TONIGHT, Monday, August 17, IH 37 northbound mainlanes will be closed from Nueces Bay Boulevard to Buddy Lawrence Drive from 9 pm until 6 am.  The closure is necessary for construction related to the New Harbor Bridge Project.

Detour signs will be in place directing northbound motorists to exit IH 37 at Nueces Bay Boulevard and re-enter at Up River Road.

Beginning August 7, Winnebago Street from Sam Rankin to Coke Street will be closed permanently

CORPUS CHRISTI –Beginning Friday, August 7, 2020, Winnebago Street will be permanently closed between Sam Rankin Street and Coke Street as a part of the Harbor Bridge Project.

Pedestrians will be able to access the neighborhood by using the new sidewalk along Lake Street.  A map showing vehicle detour routes utilizing Martin Luther King Drive, N Port Avenue, and N Staples Street is attached.

On August 13, closure to affect Leopard Street underneath SH 286 (Crosstown Expressway) from Culberson Street to Josephine Street (The long-term closure will remain in effect through 2021)

CORPUS CHRISTI –Beginning Thursday, August 13, 2020, a portion of Leopard Street will be closed from Culberson Street to Josephine Street for construction related to the Harbor Bridge Project.

Detour routes will be established utilizing Martin Luther King Drive and Comanche Street.  Traffic signs will assist with navigating motorists through alternative routes.  See attached map for recommended alternate routes.

CORPUS CHRISTI –Beginning Monday, August 17, 2020, the southbound IH 37 exit ramp to Buffalo Street will be permanently closed.

Motorists should turn on Mesquite Street to access the area serviced by the Buffalo Street exit ramp

On July 14, the newly reconstructed Martin Luther King Drive will reopen; Weather-related delays cause the new permanent roadway opening to move from June 30, to July 14.

On June 29, the newly reconstructed US 181 Southbound Frontage Road will be open

CORPUS CHRISTI –Beginning Monday, June 29, 2020, the newly reconstructed US 181 Southbound Frontage Road will be open to two-way traffic, connecting Beach Avenue to Burleson Street.  The existing Northbound Frontage Road will be closed to traffic between Burleson Street and Beach Avenue. On May 8, the newly constructed exit ramp to Comanche Street from northbound SH 286 (Crosstown Expressway) will be open to traffic.

CORPUS CHRISTI –Beginning Friday, May 8, 2020, the newly constructed exit ramp to Comanche Street from northbound SH 286 (Crosstown Expressway) will be open to traffic.  This new ramp replaces the northbound SH 286 exit ramp to Leopard Street which will be closed on May 8Th.

Motorists can now access the Corpus Christi uptown and downtown areas utilizing Comanche Street.  A map showing the alternate routes to Leopard Street is attached.

On April 24, closure to affect IH 37 direct connectors to southbound SH 286 (Crosstown Expressway) (Short term and long term lane closures)

CORPUS CHRISTI –Beginning Friday, April 24, at 9 p.m., the direct connectors from southbound IH 37 to southbound SH 286, and from northbound IH 37 to southbound SH 286 will be closed until 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 25.  These closures are necessary to complete construction of an interchange detour.

 Motorists needing to access southbound SH 286 from southbound IH 37 should take the exit for Port Avenue to Leopard Street. Motorists needing to access southbound SH 286 from northbound IH 37 should exit Nueces Bay Boulevard to Leopard Street.  Detours will be in place and traffic signs will assist motorists with navigating the alternative routes.

Beginning Saturday, April 25, at 9 p.m., the left lane of the direct connector from northbound IH 37 to southbound SH 286 will be remain closed for construction.  This closure is necessary to complete construction of a new connector. The northbound left lane will remain closed until the construction is complete.  Traffic control devices will be in place to assist motorists with navigating the route.

On March 18, Traffic Switch for North Port Avenue and IH 37 frontage roads

CORPUS CHRISTI –Beginning Wednesday, March 18, newly constructed pavement sections on N Port Avenue and IH 37 eastbound and westbound frontage roads will be opened to traffic between N Port Avenue and Stillman Avenue.

Motorists traveling along N Port Avenue between Antelope Street and Martin Luther King Drive will be shifted to the southbound lanes. IH 37 eastbound and westbound frontage roads will be shifted to the left onto newly constructed lanes. Access to side streets and to all businesses and properties along the frontage roads will be maintained during the switch.

Beginning November 21, 2019 lane shift to affect Leopard Street

CORPUS CHRISTI – The westbound and eastbound lanes of Leopard Street will be shifted between Lester Street and Sam Rankin Street beginning Thursday, November 21, 2019 to April 30, 2020 as part of the Harbor Bridge Project. The existing reduced lanes will include Leopard Street westbound traffic shifting to the eastbound lanes. The lane shifts are necessary to complete utility and bridge footing construction on Leopard Street. All work is weather permitting.

On November 18, 2019 closures to affect Port Avenue Intersection at IH 37

CORPUS CHRISTI –The intersection at IH 37 and Port Avenue will be closed on Monday, November 18, 2019 from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. as part of the Harbor Bridge Project.  The northbound and southbound lanes of Port Avenue will be reduced to one lane as motorists approach the IH 37/Port Avenue intersection.  The closures and lane reductions are necessary for the demolition of the Port Avenue Bridge.

Frontage roads will remain open and detours will be in place. Please see attached detour map.  All work is weather permitting.

The Port Avenue Bridge will be reconstructed as part of the Harbor Bridge project.

Beginning October 9, 2019, upcoming Harbor Bridge Project ramp closures to affect access onto IH 37 and SH 286 (Crosstown Expressway)

 CORPUS CHRISTI – Beginning Wednesday, October 9, 2019, ramp closures related to construction of the Harbor Bridge Project will affect northbound traffic on IH 37 near Nueces Bay Boulevard and southbound traffic on SH 286 near Leopard Street. All work is weather permitting. A detailed listing of closures is included below. 

Long-Term Ramp Closure 

On October 9, 2019 the following IH 37 entrance ramp closure will be in effect: 

The northbound IH 37 entrance ramp near Nueces Bay Boulevard will be closed for the construction of the IH 37 northbound frontage road (Martin Luther King Drive). Motorists needing to access IH 37 near the ramp closure, should continue west on the IH 37 northbound frontage road and use the entrance ramp west of Buddy Lawrence Drive. The ramp will be rebuilt as part of the Harbor Bridge Project and will reopen at a later date. 

Permanent Ramp Closure 

On October 9, 2019 the following SH 286 entrance ramp closure will be in effect: 

The southbound SH 286 entrance ramp near Leopard Street will be permanently closed as part of construction related to the Harbor Bridge Project. This ramp will not be rebuilt as part of the Project. Motorists needing to access SH 286 near the ramp closure, should continue south on the SH 286 southbound frontage road (Culberson Street) and use the entrance ramp south of Comanche Street. 

Frontage roads will remain open and traffic signs will assist with navigating motorists through alternative routes.

Beginning Saturday, October 5, 2019 the newly constructed Staples Street Bridge will be open to motorists.

 CORPUS CHRISTI – Beginning Saturday, October 5, 2019 the newly constructed Staples Street Bridge will be open to motorists. The original structure was demolished and reconstructed as part of the Harbor Bridge Project. The new bridge will connect Staples Street between Leopard Street and Winnebago Street. Construction on Martin Luther King Street and Antelope Street is ongoing. 

Pedestrian access will be available via the Staples Street Bridge, as the Alameda Street Pedestrian Bridge will close immediately following the opening of the newly constructed Staples Street Bridge. Crews will work to remove the trellis located on the Alameda Street Pedestrian Bridge. The trellis will be stored and repurposed on the project as part of the landscaping design. After the trellis is removed, the Alameda Street Pedestrian Bridge will be demolished, which is expected to take place mid-October. 

The Alameda Street Pedestrian Bridge will not be reconstructed and will remain a permanent closure. Pedestrians seeking access in this area will need to utilize the newly constructed Staples Street Bridge.

RESCHEDULED DUE TO RAIN DELAY IH 37 northbound traffic to shift to IH 37 southbound lanes as part of the Harbor Bridge Project

CORPUS CHRISTI –The major IH 37 traffic shift scheduled to take place on Wednesday, September 11 has now been rescheduled for Wednesday, September 18 due to rain delays experienced last week. 

 The northbound and southbound main lanes of IH 37 will be shifted from the existing northbound side of IH 37 to the recently constructed southbound side of IH 37 as part of construction related to the Harbor Bridge Project.  The long-term traffic shift is scheduled to go into effect Wednesday, September 18, 2019 and will last approximately one year.  All work is weather permitting.

Various short-term closures will be in effect in preparation for the continued long-term lane reductions and new traffic shift.  A detailed listing of traffic impacts is included below.

Beginning September 9, 2019 to October 30, 2019 various daily and nightly lane closures on IH 37 will take place between Buddy Lawrence Drive and State Highway 286 (Crosstown Expressway) in preparation for continued long-term lane reductions and new traffic shift listed below.

Continued Long-Term Lane Reductions/New Traffic Shift

Beginning September 18, 2019 the continued lane reductions and new traffic shift will be in effect for approximately one year:

  • IH 37 northbound shifts to IH 37 southbound main lanes.
  • IH 37 current northbound lane reductions will remain in place and will begin at State Highway 286 (Crosstown Expressway) and continue to Buddy Lawrence Drive.
  • IH 37 current southbound lane reductions will begin at Buddy Lawrence Drive and continue to State Highway 286 (Crosstown Expressway).

Motorists are urged to be aware of the lane closures, to consider using alternate routes to avoid delay, to follow all traffic control devices, and to slow down in the work zones.

Beginning September 11, the IH 37 northbound traffic to shift to IH 37 southbound lanes

CORPUS CHRISTI –The northbound and southbound main lanes of IH 37 will be shifted from the existing northbound side of IH 37 to the recently constructed southbound side of IH 37 as part of construction related to the Harbor Bridge Project.  The long-term traffic shift is scheduled to go into effect Wednesday, September 11, 2019 and will last approximately one year.  All work is weather permitting.

Various short-term closures will be in effect in preparation for the continued long-term lane reductions and new traffic shift.  A detailed listing of traffic impacts is included below.

Short-Term Closures

Beginning September 5, the Lipan Street Bridge will be closed permanently

CORPUS CHRISTI –Beginning Thursday, September 5, 2019 the Lipan Street Bridge will be closed to traffic.   The structure is to be demolished as part of the Harbor Bridge Project.   As part of the demolition process, nightly lane closures will affect SH 286 (Crosstown Expressway).  The main lanes will be closed nightly between Agnes Street and IH 37 from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. from Friday, September 6, 2019 to Sunday, September 8, 2019.  All work is weather permitting.  Details of the closures are listed below.

September 6, 2019
Southbound SH 286 will be closed to through traffic.  Northbound SH 286 through traffic will be reduced to one lane.

September 7, 2019
Northbound SH 286 will be closed to through traffic.  Southbound SH 286 through traffic will be reduced to one lane.

During the demolition process, downtown access for northbound SH 286 will still be available via Agnes Street. (See attached map for recommended alternate routes for all SH 286 closures).

Once demolition is complete, traffic patterns near the bridge will include the reduction of Brownlee Boulevard to one lane between Lipan Street and Leopard Street.  Pedestrian access will be available via the newly constructed Comanche Street Bridge.

The Lipan Street Bridge will not be reconstructed and will remain a permanent closure. Traffic seeking access in this area will need to utilize the newly constructed Comanche Street Bridge.

Beginning August 14, the newly constructed Comanche Street Bridge now open to traffic

CORPUS CHRISTI –Beginning Wednesday, August 14, 2019 the newly constructed Comanche Street Bridge will be open to motorists.   The original structure was demolished and reconstructed as part of the Harbor Bridge Project.  Traffic patterns near the bridge will include the opening of Comanche Street from Coke Street to Mexico Street, two lanes of Culberson Street, south of Comanche Street and the southbound SH 286 entrance ramp. All way stops will be in place at the Comanche Street and Culberson Street intersection.  Pedestrian access on the new Comanche Street Bridge is still under construction.  Pedestrian access will be available via the Lipan Street Bridge, until further notice. Construction plans include the closing of Lipan Street for demolition of the Lipan Street Bridge, which is expected to begin later this fall.

Beginning July 24, traffic switch to affect North Beach area

CORPUS CHRISTI –Beginning Wednesday, July 24, 2019 traffic on the northbound US 181 frontage road between Burleson Street and Avenue F will be detoured to the newly constructed southbound Joe Fulton Corridor as part of the Harbor Bridge Project. The traffic switch will include opening the newly constructed southbound Joe Fulton Corridor road to two-way traffic. Traffic signs will assist with navigating motorists through the newly created route.   Please see below map for more information.  All work is weather permitting.

Beginning May 29, 2019 closures to affect southbound traffic on SH 286 (Crosstown Expressway)

CORPUS CHRISTI – Beginning May 29, 2019, long-term ramp closures will affect southbound traffic on SH 286 (Crosstown Expressway) between Leopard Street and Agnes Street.  All work is weather permitting. A detailed listing of closures is included below.

Beginning May 29, 2019 to July 31, 2019 the following ramp closure will be in effect:

The southbound exit ramp from SH 286 (Crosstown Expressway) to Laredo/Agnes Streets will be closed for the construction of the SH 286 southbound frontage road (Culberson St.)  Motorists needing to exit southbound SH 286 in this area will need to utilize the Morgan Avenue exit ramp.

Beginning May 29, 2019 to July 31, 2019 the following ramp closure will be in effect:

The southbound entrance ramp to SH 286 (Crosstown Expressway) south of Comanche Street will be closed for the construction of the SH 286 southbound frontage road (Culberson St.)  Motorists needing to enter southbound SH 286 in this area will need to utilize the SH 286 entrance ramp south of Agnes Street.

Detour routes will be established and traffic signs will assist with navigating motorists through alternative routes.

Beginning Monday, April 15, 2019 lane reductions to affect Leopard Street

As part of the construction related to the Harbor Bridge, Leopard Street will be reduced to one lane in each direction between Lester Street and Mexico Street.  The lane reductions will go into effect Monday, April 15, 2019 and will last until December 31, 2019.   The lane reductions are necessary to construct bridge footings in this area.  All work is weather permitting.

Beginning Wednesday, February 13, 2019 to April 2019

The northbound lanes of IH 37 frontage road (Martin Luther King Drive) will be reduced to one lane between Brownlee Boulevard and Port Avenue beginning Wednesday, February 13, 2019 to April 2019 as part of the Harbor Bridge Project. The lane reductions are necessary to complete drainage work on northbound IH 37 frontage road (Martin Luther King Drive).  All work is weather permitting.

Beginning Wednesday, October 24, 2018 through December 31, 2020 lane closures to affect US 181

Closures to include NB lane reductions

The northbound lanes of US 181 will be reduced to two lanes between Burleson Street and Beach Avenue beginning Wednesday, October 24, 2018 through December 31, 2020 as part of the Harbor Bridge Project.   The lane reductions are necessary to complete drainage work on US 181 and to complete the US 181 detour that will be utilized throughout construction.   The frontage road will remain open. All work is weather permitting. 

 

Beginning Monday, October 15, 2018 through March 2019 Upcoming Harbor Bridge Project closures to affect Port Avenue

Closures will affect Port Avenue intersection at IH 37/i>

The northbound and southbound lanes of Port Avenue will be reduced to one lane in each direction as motorists approach the IH 37/Port Avenue intersection. Lane reductions/closures will begin Monday, October 15, 2018 and remain through March 2019 as part of the Harbor Bridge Project. The closures and lane reductions are necessary for the reconstruction of the Port Avenue Bridge. Frontage roads will remain open. All work is weather permitting.
 

Beginning Tuesday, August 28, 2018 through June 2019 Upcoming Harbor Bridge Project closures to affect Nueces Bay Boulevard

Closures will affect Nueces Bay intersection at IH 37

The northbound and southbound lanes of Nueces Bay Boulevard will be reduced to one lane in each direction as motorists approach the IH 37/Nueces Bay Boulevard intersection. Lane reductions/closures will begin Tuesday, August 28, 2018 and remain through June 2019 as part of the Harbor Bridge Project. The closures and lane reductions are necessary for the reconstruction of the Nueces Bay Bridge. Frontage roads will remain open.

Beginning Monday, August 6, 2018 through March 2019 Upcoming Harbor Bridge Project closures to affect US 181

Closures to affect main lanes and frontage roads of US 181 between Burleson Street and Beach Avenue

Various daily and nightly lane closures on US 181 main lanes and frontage roads will take place between Burleson Street and Beach Avenue beginning Monday, August 6, 2018 through March 2019 as part of the Harbor Bridge Project. Intermittent daily and nightly closures affecting the northbound and southbound main lanes and frontage roads of US 181 will not last more than 24 hours.

Beginning June 29, 2018 Upcoming Harbor Bridge Project traffic switch to affect North Beach area

Closures to result in two-way traffic on US 181 northbound frontage road

Beginning June 29, 2018 traffic on the southbound US 181 frontage road between Burleson Street and Beach Street will be detoured to the northbound frontage road of US 181 as part of the Harbor Bridge Project. The traffic switch will include two-way traffic movement in this area, where it was previously configured for one-way traffic only. Traffic signs will assist with navigating motorists through the newly created route. The traffic switch will remain in effect for approximately one year. Long-Term Closure Beginning June 5, 2018 to December 2019 to affect northbound SH 286 Laredo/Agnes Street entrance ramp and frontage road

The northbound SH 286 frontage road (Brownlee Street) from Mussett Street to Lipan Street will be closed. See attached map for recommended alternate routes for access to uptown and IH37.

Permanent Closure Beginning June 5, 2018 to affect northbound SH 286 Laredo/Agnes Street entrance ramp and frontage road

The northbound SH 286 (Crosstown Expressway) entrance ramp from Laredo/Agnes Street will be closed.

REVISED–Permanent Closure Beginning May 15, 2018

The northbound US 181 Beach Avenue exit will be closed. Motorists traveling north must utilize the Burleson Street exit for access to North Beach.

Long-Term Lane Reductions/Traffic Shift Beginning May 7, 2018 to April 2019 the following lane reductions and traffic shift will be in effect:

  • IH 37 northbound lane reductions will begin at State Highway 286 (Crosstown Expressway) and continue to Buddy Lawrence Drive. Lanes will be reduced from three lanes to two lanes.
  • IH 37 southbound lane reductions will begin at Buddy Lawrence Drive and continue to State Highway 286 (Crosstown Expressway). Lanes will be reduced from three lanes to two lanes.
  • IH 37 southbound traffic shifts to IH 37 northbound main lanes.

Long-Term Closures Beginning April 2, 2018 to April 2019 affect portions of IH 37 and US 181

  • Northbound IH 37 entrance ramp from Tancahua St. will be closed.
  • Northbound IH 37 exit ramp to Brownlee Blvd. will be closed.
  • Southbound IH 37 entrance ramp from Brownlee Blvd. will be closed.

Beginning January 29, 2018 to April 2019 the following closures will be in effect:

The left lane on northbound SH 286 (Crosstown Expressway) and the left lane on southbound SH 286 (Crosstown Expressway) will be closed between IH 37 and Agnes Street.
